Whenever we think of visualising Nehanda what comes to our minds immediately is the image of her standing with Sekuru Kaguvi just before her execution by the colonial British government of the day. So in creating this typeface I wanted to expand our visual understanding of who Nehanda was and what she represented. I wanted to add to this modern artefact the idea of Mbuya Nehanda so her legacy can be relived through different mediums and broad. The creation of this typeface is part of an ongoing project named Canonising Events & Activists Through Typography. I presented a talk at the ATyPI conference of 2021 under the same title. This project is about the documentation of events, movements and personalities in Zimbabwe through the creation of typefaces named after them.
